Cedar Treehouse
Couchages 2 240 sq ft + 120 sq ft deck

Cedar Treehouse

Ten metres up a living deodar, with a wraparound deck hanging over the stream. It is built on adjustable collars, so the tree keeps growing through the structure rather than being strangled by it. Inside: a double bed under a glazed gable and a wood-burning stove. The hot shower and composting toilet are in a private cabin at the base of the tree. The ladder-stair has a handrail and is perfectly safe — but it is steep, and we would rather say now that it does not suit anyone unsteady on their feet at night. No Wi-Fi up here on purpose. There is signal down in the clearing if you need it.

Pine Treehouse
Couchages 2 180 sq ft + deck

Pine Treehouse

The smaller of the two treehouses, eight metres up a pine at the quiet end of the site. A reading nook built into the window bay, a double bed, and a deck with room for two chairs and a coffee. Warmer than the cedar through winter — less glass, more insulation — and a shorter climb, which matters to more guests than admit it. The forest here is thick enough that you will not see another structure from the deck.

Forest Floor Room

A ground-level room in the timber lodge, for anyone who would rather not climb — and for families, since the treehouses are genuinely not suitable for small children. One double bed and one single, an ensuite bathroom, and a door opening onto the clearing with the fire pit. It catches the morning sun before either treehouse does. Wi-Fi reaches this room properly, which is not true of the trees.

I am Tashi. I built both treehouses myself from local deodar over two winters, ten metres up in the canopy. There is no television and patchy signal — that is the point. Wake with the birds, read on the deck, and let the forest do the rest.

Jibhi, Himachal Pradesh

À propos de Jibhi, Himachal Pradesh

Jibhi is a forest village in the Banjar valley, all deodar cedar, wooden bridges and a stream that runs past most doorsteps. It has become the Himalayas' favourite slow-travel stop without losing the plot — there is a waterfall, a serpentine temple with astonishing woodwork at Chaini Kothi, and a great deal of walking. Nights are cold most of the year, which is exactly why the fire pit gets used.

Coup de cœur des voyageurs

Les voyageurs se souviennent

Actually up a tree. Tashi built the whole thing himself and it shows.
Nikhil D. Gurgaon
No signal, no TV, best sleep of the year. The deck over the stream is unreal.
Emma L. Melbourne
Magical, though do pack warm — the canopy gets cold after dark.
Farah S. Hyderabad
Woke up inside a forest. Worth every rupee and the climb.
